Goldbugs pick up a win against the Maroons

After struggling early in the first quarter, the Alva High School Goldbugs battled against the Perry Maroons to emerge as the victors in a 52-45 win.

Though the Goldbugs were the first with the bucket after a short jumper from Brooks Hadwiger to give them an early lead, the Maroons jumped to a 12-0 run before Alva was able to score off a corner three from Hadwiger to trail Perry 5-12.

Alva continued to struggle against the Maroons for the rest of the first quarter, trailing by as much as 11 points going into the second 10-21.

The Goldbugs made a huge comeback starting in the second quarter as Ethan Harzman started 10-0 run with right wing three. Back-to-back layups from Mitchell Meyer and T.W. Beiswanger followed by another trey from Harzman brought Alva back within a point of the Maroons lead 20-21.

Though Alva continued to trail Perry by the end of the half, the Goldbugs made strides in that second quarter to trail by just four points, 24-28.

Alva started the third quarter with another huge run (11-0) to quickly take back the lead with Brooks leading the charge. The Goldbugs got their second lead of the night with the score at 35-28.

The next two quarters saw two ties and two lead changes, before Alva was able to create some distance in the final quarter on an 8-0 run to put the score at 49-42. From there, the Goldbugs were able to hold the Maroons on defense to get the 52-45 win.

Stats

Hadwiger led the Goldbugs from the field with 20 points to go with two rebounds. Harzman was the only other Goldbug to pass the double-digit mark with 11 points along with a rebound, one assist and one steal.

Other contributors were Ethan Flynt (9 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 1 steal), Grant Ritter (4 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist), Lane Scarbrough (4 points), Meyer (2 points, 1 assist) and Beiswanger (2 points, 2 rebounds).

Next up, the Goldbugs travel to Chisholm to face the Longhorns tonight for a scheduled 8 p.m. tipoff. Alva has taken down the Longhorns twice this season, and will look to get another victory in a tough battle.
