Ladybugs cruise to become District Champs

The Alva High School Ladybugs (16-6) hosted the Crooked Oak Lady Ruf-Nex (2-18) Saturday night for their first post-season game and Class 3A Area 1 District playoffs. The Ladybugs had a dominating performance in the first quarter, shooting 6-for-7 from the three-point range, and were able to count on their bench to put the game away in a 55-12 victory.

Alva came out firing in the first quarter, as Ally Riley set the Ladybugs on an 11-0 run with an open three-pointer. The Lady Ruf-Nex had no field goals in the first, with only a single point coming from the free throw line while Alva had six different players put points on the board.

From there, the Ladybugs were able to rely on their young bench to take over with Bianca Ruiz leading the way starting the second quarter with a putback and following that with a fastbreak layup to lead 31-1.

Crooked Oak finally made double-digits on the scoreboard late in the fourth quarter, but Alva came out with the easy win at 55-12 and the Class 3A Area 1 District Champions.

Ruiz led the Ladybugs against Crooked Oak with 10 points to go with six rebounds and one steal. Other contributors were Payton Jones (9 points. 3 rebounds), Whitney Randall (7 points, 2 rebounds), Allison Severs (7 points, 1 rebound, 2 steals), Mattie Duncan (6 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals), Hallie Durkee (3 points, 4 rebounds), Tatum Rouse (3 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist), Riley (3 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist), Cathy Mapes (3 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal), Jordan Shiever (2 points) and Stephanie Spellman (2 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist).

The Ladybugs (17-6) will travel to Oklahoma Christian School) to faceoff with the hosts in the Regional winners' bracket on Thursday, Feb. 23, for a 6:30 p.m. tipoff.
