ECU Women's Basketball Come Up Just Short Against Colorado School of Mines

GOLDEN, COLO. – The East Central University women's basketball team fell just short of picking up a non-conference win, as they lost to Colorado School of Mines 59-55, in the first of two games in Colorado.

The Tigers (1-2, 1-1 GAC) were led by freshman Kendall Schulte and senior Aaliyah Blakley, with double-digit points totals. Schulte led the team with 11 points, while adding two rebounds and a steal. Blakley missed a double-double by just one rebound, recording 10 points, nine rebounds and two steals.

ECU started the game strong, jumping out to a 7-2 advantage in the first three minutes. The Orediggers (3-2) got their second shot and then both teams whet cold shooting, with only two free throws scored by the Tigers over the next two minutes. ECU added five more points the rest of the quarter to just three CSM for a 13-7 lead.

The Orediggers fought back in the second quarter and used an 8-2 run in the first three minutes to tie the game at 15. The teams traded shots and ties through the rest of the quarter, with CSM holding a 25-22 advantage.

While the Orediggers hit the first shot of the second half, the Tigers followed with an 8-0 run to regain the lead 31-27. CSM didn't give up and pushed back with a 19-9 run over the rest of the stanza in order to toggle the lead back to their side of the scoreboard, 46-40.

ECU came out firing in the final quarter, scoring the first 10 points for a 50-46 advantage, with 6:45 left to play. The Orediggers netted the next six points to earn a two-point advantage. The Tigers tied the game at 52, with 1:49 left to play and the teams then traded shots to see a tie at 55, with 40 seconds left to play.

CSM took advantage of four free-throw attempts in the final seconds to earn the 59-55 win.

ECU will finish up their time in Colorado, Saturday, November 25 when they travel to Denver to face Regis at 2 p.m.
