Rattlers Take Win over Hillcats in Battle for First Place in Heartland Conference

CLAREMORE, Okla. – In a battle for first place in the Heartland Conference standings, visiting St. Mary's shutout the Rogers State softball team in an 8-0 game at the Diamond Sports Complex on Saturday (March 17).

With the win, the Rattlers won the series, 2-1, to go up in the league standings at 11-1. The Hillcats dropped to 9-3 in the league for second place and fell to 24-7 overall.

StMU took advantage of three RSU errors to plate eight runs, seven of them unearned, for the 8-0 score. The Rattlers started in the first inning with two runs. A singled drove in the only earned run of the game for a 1-0 margin, and a wild pitch allowed another run for a 2-0 Rattler lead after one inning.

In the fourth inning, a double down the line plated one run before the Rattlers tallied five unearned runs in the seventh inning. An error and a groundout put two runs on the board for a 5-0 score. After a single totaled another run, a two-run home run upped the score to the final 8-0 margin.

StMU's Staci Johns limited the Hillcats to only one hit. She had a no-hitter going through 6.1 innings before Taylor Santistevan knocked a single to the gap in right center. Johns finished with one hit allowed and four strikeouts in 7.0 innings.

The freshman pitching duo of Andrea Morales and Tailee Reding held the Rattlers to only one earned run combined for the 7.0 innings in the circle. Morales started, going the first 3.0 innings. She posted one strikeout with four hits allowed and the one earned run. Reding came in for the final 4.0 innings and didn't allow an earned run with five hits given up.

The Hillcats travel to Newman next weekend for a three-game Heartland Conference series in Wichita, Kan. The series starts on Friday (March 23) with a doubleheader at 4 p.m. at the Newman Softball Field. Video streaming and live stats will be available for all three games.
