Softball: ECU Takes Two From Henderson on Saturday

March 31, 2019

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State was unable to get the bats going in the first half of a four game series at East Central, as the Reddies scored just one run over two contests, falling 13-1 and 3-0 in Saturday's doubleheader.

Selena Mendoza was a bright spot in the HSU order in the second half of Saturday's action as she went 2-for-2 with a double. In the circle, Monica Monreal had an excellent relief appearance for the second time in as many weekends. Monreal went 3 1/3 innings and allowed just three baserunners to keep the Reddies within striking distance.

Henderson State (18-18, 12-12) will finish the doubleheader tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.

Game One: East Central 13, Henderson State 1

Despite the outcome of the doubleheader, it was HSU that scored the day's first run. In the top of the second inning, Madie Green took a 1-1 pitch over the centerfield wall for her fourth home run of the season and gave the Reddies a 1-0 lead.

The Reddies' lead did not last for long. After striking out two in the bottom of the first, Sorensen's control issues began in the second, when she hit ECU's Tatiana Bryant before throwing two wild pitches to move Bryant to third with one out. Following another free pass, ECU singled to tie the game at 1-1 after two innings.

ECU took the lead for good in the third when Bridget Gleason came up clutch with a two-out, bases clearing double that put the Tigers in front 4-1. East Central would score four more in the frame and led 8-1 through three innings.

The Tigers got all the run support they would need in the bottom of the fourth with another bases clearing double from Sable Hankins. ECU added one more on a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 13-1.

Although Lindsey Williams led off the fifth with a single and later advanced to third on an error, Williams was left stranded, and the Reddies fell in the run-rule shortened game, 13-1.

Game Two: East Central 3, Henderson State 0

For the second game in a row, the first run was scored by way of a solo home run. Unfortunately for HSU, it was East Central's Hankins that went deep to lead off the bottom of the first for the Tigers, who had a lightning quick 1-0 lead after one inning.

HSU had a great opportunity to tie or take the lead in the second after Alexis Morton, Nadia Ballarin and Ashleigh Erb stood on third, second, and first base, respectively, after a single and two walks. Facing an 0-2 count with just one out, Ashlyn Taylor ripped a line drive, but it was caught by the ECU second baseman, who fired to first for the inning-ending double play.

ECU added two more in the bottom of the third after Breecia Crawford came around to score following a leadoff double. Later in the inning, East Central's Bryant came through again, singling home another run to put the Tigers in front 3-0.

Henderson was unable to put a runner in scoring position in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, but did threaten in the seventh. Mendoza doubled down the left field line to lead off and Sam Smith was hit by a pitch, which brought the tying run to the plate with nobody out.

Two batters later, the Reddies had runners on the corners with one out, but Taylor flew out to right field, and Erb was doubled off at first base to end the threat, and the game, as the Tigers got the Saturday sweep, 3-0.
