Next weekend is Labor Day

August 25, 2019

Let's hope for cooler weather and lots of free food and fellowship.

It's been a banner birthday month for my family. Mine was August 2nd, followed by cousins from Lincoln, Nebraska. Allen Scribner's was on the 4th and his wife Karen's on the 20th. Karen shares her birthday with my great-grandson, Drake. Grandson Josh's birthday was August 16th. Last but not least is granddaughter Jaylyn's on the 27th. Happy birthday to all my family and to anyone that shares an August birthday with the Scribners.

I read somewhere that things have been quiet from the no voters after the bond issue failed. I guess we haven't had any parades or picnics to celebrate, but rest assured lots of ideas about financing are being looked at around town. Some will not work, some need to be in place for other options to materialize, and others are still being tossed around.

One plan I have heard about is to take 1/4th cent from the rec park and 1/4th cent from the college scholarship funding. This one-cent tax was implemented as an economic development tax, so it can be used wherever it is needed. The city does not have to ask permission to use this.

I don't know and did not ask how much is still owed on the rec park bond, but it should be about done. I also don't know if the scholarships are given out at the $250 rate per student I remember was the plan, or they can get more than one from Alva money. There could be room for adjustment, but I don't know how much.

I had one guy suggest that the hospital sales tax money be used and the hospital sucks it up and stands on their own. In fairness, this guy was in really good health that proposed taking the funds.

I read where the downtown Share Clinic is moving to the hospital in October. It will be a bummer for Dad and me because we only had to drive 3 or 4 blocks to see Brian. On the other hand, if any procedures that couldn't be done at the clinic are needed it will be one-stop doctoring.

This pool thing has sure made a lot of unrest in Alva. Petitions are going around to ask for a state audit of Alva's finances. I have the graft well-hidden at the City Marshal's office, so bring it on.

Have a blessed week.
