Ecstatic Homecoming

Series: Burlington School News | Story 2

This year's homecoming for Burlington was an exciting one. While the Lady Elks couldn't pull off a win, the Elks game was a great one. Before the game started, senior Mylee Sims was crowned homecoming queen, escorted by senior Sterling Stewart.

Junior queen candidates were Hailey McCullough, Brianna McGee and Emily Klippenstein. They were escorted by Freedom seniors Angel LaPlante and Michael Page, and senior Logan Stewart. After coronation and the girls' game against the Canton Tigers, the community got to watch a game that was back and forth all the way down to the wire until the final buzzer.

The Elks were down 10 with 1:50 seconds left until one of Burlington's guards got a steal and the putback layup that started the comeback. Burlington got a couple more stops and buckets and pushed the score back up to a 2-point deficit 47-49, down two with less than a minute to go.

Burlington Elk, Michael Page, hit two free throws to tie the game with 40 seconds to go. One of the Canton players went up for a layup with 13 seconds left and Burlington got the rebound.

It was a tied game with 13 seconds left and it was Burlington's ball. They pushed the ball around and found an open shot and hit it, giving Canton 5 seconds left to score. Burlington played solid defense and forced number 11 of the Canton Tigers to shoot a contested 3 for the win and it bounced off the back of the rim to give the Elks a homecoming win and a reason to celebrate at the homecoming dance.
