Holy moments: Give me a break

When I wrote my last article in December, I spoke a little bit about taking time away from the busyness of the world to have a special time to remember the reason for the season. After writing that article, I got this little book entitled “Holy Moments,” by Matthew Kelly. As I read this book, it shows me that Christians have given in and allowed the world to take away the opportunity of encountering God in small, momentary experiences.

For God to work in our lives, we must do our part, too. We must give up our agenda, our self-centeredness, and our will and allow ourselves to take on what God wants instead. For God to bless the Israelites, they had to do the same thing. The false idols had to go. They had to turn away from their sin and run towards God again. Then He blessed them. However, their actions also had consequences and so do ours. Are we going to produce holy moments with God or unholy moments with the world? We have a decision to make, and it will have consequences that will follow us into eternity.

So, I am sure you are asking yourself the question of what exactly a holy moment is. I think it is well defined as “Times, although mostly brief, where it seems like God pulls me to the side, is right there next to me, and showing me something or teaching me something. It is a time when it seems like it is just God and me and the whole world is filtered out. God has me where He wants me, and He has my full attention” (Unknown). It is simply having small times with God where we encounter Him in special ways. We need these now more than ever before. The world wants to drown out everything of God, and we must resist this and continue to seek God, even in the smallest of ways.

There are countless examples that I can think of that could be classified as a holy moment. These can’t just be moments we have with God that end in that moment, without any impact on the larger issues that we all endure throughout our daily lives. He wants them to impact the important areas of our lives: our marriage, parenting, health, finances, work, spirituality, and the list goes on. He wants to help us control our temper, to pray before making a decision, to be patient with someone where our patience is tested, and to make a new person feel welcome. These are all small, tangible ways that we can encounter God in our everyday lives. As He works through us, we encounter Him and He blesses us as we bless others.

Nothing can be more important than for us to encounter God by reading His Word, through prayer, through worship, whether that be individually or as a community of believers, through journaling, etc. We must feed ourselves spiritually. I believe that worshiping with others in a church setting is crucial for the believer. We need each other and we were never meant to do this alone. We need to feel God’s love, encouragement, hope, peace, etc. and I feel that the church setting is where we can feel this in a very real and tangible way.

As I close this article, I hope you can experience these holy moments in your life. Allow God to keep you focused on Him. Find your encouragement, boldness and hope in Him as we encounter Him in daily life. As you encounter Him, may you share the key to finding answers to everything in life which is only found in Jesus. This world is searching and putting everything in the void to try to satisfy it. But only Jesus can fill that void and truly satisfy. He is all we need. Are you willing to seek and experience Jesus each day? The decision is yours. But if you choose yes, I promise you won’t regret it!
