  • It's the music we make that counts

    Carolyn Murrow, First Presbyterian Church|Apr 28, 2017

In his book “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten,” Robert Fulghum writes that every year he spends a week in Weiser, Idaho, a town of about 4,000 people, and the home of the Grand National Old-Time Fiddlers’ Contest. On the last week in June, people descend on that small town from everywhere: Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and some people come as far away as Japan. They come to play and sing and have a good time. One time long-haired hippies began to show up. People with tatoos and leather jackets came on motorcycles. Some of these...

  • Spiritually Speaking

    W. Jay Tyree, College Hill Church of Christ|Apr 28, 2017

Last weekend, we made a flying trip to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to watch my eldest niece solemnize her nuptials. It was far less painful than it sounded – at least for the bride and groom. The weather front that passed through Alva on Thursday and Friday dumped copious amounts of moisture on the Gardens of the Ozarks, where the ceremony was scheduled to be held. It also dropped the temperature from a balmy 70 degrees to an afternoon high of 47. However, no change of venue was forthcoming, so we all gathered under the large tents with our j...

  • Gender

    Arden Chaffee|Apr 28, 2017

Katy Steinmetz in Time magazine says, “An increasing number of people say they aren’t one sex or the other but perhaps neither or maybe both.” I guess the term “gender fluid” might apply but that concept, whether applied to Caitlyn Jenner, who fought with her identity for a lifetime, or a pre-teen seeking a place in society, the norm has certainly changed. With erosion of the traditional family and social media coverage of the here-to-unmentionable, it makes for a transition from what we expect...

  • Carl's Capitol Comments

    Rep. Carl Newton|Apr 28, 2017

As you know, I try to use these columns as a way to share what’s happening at the state Capitol. Sometimes I share how the process works, and other times I highlight policy or legislation that could affect our part of the state. Today, I would like to tell you how much of a privilege it is to serve the great people of House District 58. Our district is actually the second largest in the state. While every representative serves roughly 37,500 constituents, lawmakers from more rural areas serve a...

  • Random Thoughts

    Roger Hardaway|Apr 28, 2017

Daniel Sickles won a seat in the United States House of Representatives in 1856, representing a district in New York City. He was re-elected in 1858, and served from 1857 to 1861. Sickles did not seek a third term in Congress in the election of 1860, having just been the subject of one of the most salacious murder trials in the history of the nation’s capital. On Feb. 27, 1859, Congressman Sickles shot numerous times an unarmed man named Philip Barton Key who died later that day. Key, who was f...
