  • The greatest education or the worst

Pastor Paul Cole, Town & Country Christian Church|Aug 9, 2019

School will start in about a month. Some parents have great excitement as their children go back to school and have a chance to further their education. The cost for a child to start school and finish their high school education in public schools is around about $150,000. If they go on to college it will cost around another $200,000 or $300,000. If they add in all the time and sacrifice, they wonder if the cost of the education is worth it? Is the money well spent or did they throw their money...

  • Spiritually Speaking

    W. Jay Tyree, College Hill Church of Christ|Aug 9, 2019

If you’ve been around me much, these last few weeks, I’ve probably mentioned a book I’ve been reading by Ken Ham called “Gospel Reset” (salvation made RELEVANT). I have to admit, the title kept me from beginning this read for quite a while. It seemed that Ken was saying we needed to fix the Gospel to make salvation “relevant.” Of course, that was not his intention at all. Just for reference sake, Ken is the founder of Answers in Genesis, the Creation Museum and the Ark Encounter. If you have a moment, you might take a look at some of his work....

  • Summer heat

    Arden Chaffee|Aug 9, 2019

John Sebastian of the Lovin’ Spoonful sang, “Hot time, summer in the city, back of my neck getting’ dirt and gritty,” and global warming was yet to come! Oklahoma, cool, and August have never been used in the same sentence. I remember childhood without air conditioning. We had “water coolers,” which, unlike air conditioning which removes humidity, added moisture to the air. We had to have some windows open to allow the large quantity of humid air inserted into the living space by the squirre...

    Roger Hardaway|Aug 9, 2019

President Abraham Lincoln (who served from 1861 to 1865) and his wife, Mary, had four children. All boys, they were – in the order of their births – Robert, Edward, William and Thomas. Unfortunately, Robert was the only one to live to adulthood. Robert Lincoln lived a long and notable life. Born in August 1843, he became a successful corporate attorney after undergraduate work at Harvard and law school at Northwestern University in his native Illinois. Lincoln also had a distinguished pol...

  • Murdock's Minutes

    Sen. Casey Murdock|Aug 9, 2019

Interim is the time in between the end of one legislative session and the beginning of another. While it is true that the session itself is only about four months long, work continues at the State Capitol throughout the year. A couple of weeks ago, the President Pro Tempore of the Senate announced a list of 72 interim studies that had received approval. These studies afford legislators the opportunity to hold in-depth hearings on complex issues that may come before us during the session. Some of the studies may be simply to inform legislators...

  • Letter to the Editor: Preserve our treasure

    Aug 9, 2019

None of the plans being considered for the Alva pool include any figures for repair and restoration of our existing historical Alva pool. As I understand it, a yes vote allows a committee to choose any design they want and the designs that have been presented are only ideas. It seems that going from a 15,000 sq. ft. facility (what we have now) to one half or less (as illustrated in proposed drawings) doesn’t make sense for our community. The citizens of Alva deserve the facts. Give me the facts about a concrete plan and perhaps I’ll be in fav...

  • City: Police killing of naked, unarmed teen was justified

    Tim Talley|Aug 9, 2019

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Police in an Oklahoma City suburb were justified when they fatally shot a black teenager who was naked and unarmed, an attorney for the city argues in a response to a civil rights lawsuit filed by the teen's parents. The parents of Isaiah Mark Lewis contend in their federal lawsuit that Sgt. Milo Box and Officer Denton Scherman used excessive force and acted "unnecessarily and unjustly" when they hit their 17-year-old son with a stun gun and then fatally shot him on April 29 after he allegedly broke into a home. In a r...

He's charged with first-degree murder in the Aug. 8, 2009, stabbing death of 49-year-old Dwight Patrick in southwest Oklahoma City. Cunningham says Fuentes has family and friends in the Baja California, Mexico, area. Cunningham says Fuentes was an employee of Patrick, who owned Patrick Plumbing. T...

  • Watchdog agency obtains testimony against Kansas official

    Roxana Hegeman|Aug 9, 2019

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Sedgwick County Commissioner Michael O'Donnell said Thursday that a Kansas government watchdog that purchased transcripts this week of the testimony of four campaign workers at his federal trial was acting in response to a self-referral last year seeking an investigation by the state agency. Jurors in March acquitted O'Donnell on 21 counts of wire fraud, but deadlocked on two counts of wire fraud and three counts of money laundering related to his state and county campaigns. The judge later dismissed the remaining counts a...
