October 30, 2016

The Oklahoma State Department of Education has released the A-F Report Cards for the 2015-2016 school year. Alva’s five schools received As and Cs.

Letter grades are based on student performance (50 percent), overall student growth (25 percent) and bottom growth (25 percent). Student achievement is based on the school testing program assessments in grades three through high school. Overall student growth is based on annual student learning gains as measured by Oklahoma’s standardized assessments in reading and mathematics in grades three through eight, and Algebra I and English II end-of-instruction tests. Bottom student growth is based on the growth of the bottom 25 percent of incoming students as measured by Oklahoma’s standardized assessments in reading and mathematics in grades three through eight, and Algebra I and English II end-of-instruction tests.

Up to 10 bonus points are awarded for factors including attendance, dropout rate, advanced coursework, college entrance exams, graduation rate, overall performance and year-to-year growth.

Last year Alva schools earned the following grades: Alva High School A-, Alva Middle School C, Lincoln Elementary C+, Longfellow Elementary A-, and Washington Elementary A-.

Washington and Longfellow

According to the report, Alva’s highest performing schools are Washington and Longfellow elementary schools, receiving identical A grades and scores of 93. The A letter grade requires a score of 90 to 100.

Washington School serves children in pre-K through first grade. Longfellow includes students from pre-K to third grade.

Each of the schools had 88 students who received a performance index of 82 in reading and 84 in math, qualifying as a B. Washington received 10 bonus points for having an attendance rate of greater than 95 percent, earning them 93 points and the letter grade of A. Longfellow School also received 10 bonus points for an attendance rate greater than 95 percent and qualifying them for an A.

Lincoln

Lincoln Elementary School serves students in grades four and five. The number of students tested in reading and mathematics was 105 with a performance index of 74 and 77 respectively earning a letter grade of C. Tested in science and social studies were 59 students with a performance index of 59 in science for an F and 78 in social studies for a C. Lincoln had a 73 in student achievement.

In overall student growth, Lincoln earned 77 points and a C. In the bottom quartile student growth, Lincoln received a 44 and an F. Lincoln received 10 bonus points for an attendance rate of greater than 95 percent, earning a 77 and a final letter grade of C+.

Alva Middle School

Alva Middle School (AMS) earned a C grade with 75 points. The school is attended by students in grades six through eight. AMS earned a D in student achievement, a C in overall student growth and an F in overall bottom quartile growth.

In reading, 189 students earned a performance index of 78 for a C. In math and Algebra I, 189 students earned a 61 performance index for a D. In science, 59 students were tested earning a 73 performance index and a C grade. In social studies, geography and U.S. history, the 118 students tested earned a performance index of 58 for an F. That added up to the D grade (68) in student achievement.

In student growth, AMS had an 81 or B in reading and a 70 or C in math and Algebra I. In bottom quartile growth, AMS had a 51 in reading and a 47 in math for F grades.

AMS qualified for 10 bonus points: six for an attendance rate of 95 percent, two for a dropout rate of less than two percent, and two for a greater than 90 percent participation in advanced coursework.

Alva High School

Alva High School (AHS) also earned a C grade with 75 points. AHS earned a C in student achievement, a C in overall student growth and a D in bottom quartile student growth. Earning only three bonus points kept them from earning a higher letter grade.

In student achievement, AHS earned B’s in English II and English III (83 performance index) and in Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry (82).

However, in Biology I, students reached only a 50 performance index for an F. U.S. History had a 78 for a C grade. That gave AHS an average of 75 and a C in that section, which makes of half of the overall letter grade.

In overall student growth, AHS also averaged a C with 75 points. English II had a 77 and Algebra I a 72, both C grades.

In bottom quartile student growth, AHS had 16 students tested for a performance index of 50 and an F. There were 17 students tested in Algebra I for a 71 and a C. That averaged 51 points and a letter grade of D.

In bonus points, AHS earned one point for advanced coursework with performance greater than 95 percent ad participation greater than 95 percent. Another bonus point was earned for low performing eighth grade cohort rate of 89 percent. The third bonus point was for year to year growth. AHS did not earn any points for cohort graduation rate, college entrance exam (performance 60 percent, participation 66 percent), or end of instruction performance (68 percent).
