County extension office increases staff

Walinda Arnett is working with a group of fourth graders on how many vegetables they need to have each day.

Walinda Arnett joined the Barber and Pratt, Kansas, county extension office as a nutrition assistant this fall. The part-time position is funded entirely by grant funds. The Barber and Pratt county extensions agents collaborated to write a grant proposal for nutrition education that allowed for the hiring of a very part-time program assistant.

Arnett's education in Early Childhood is extremely valuable when teaching in the grade school classrooms. One program is Book In a Bag. Once a month, she will read a book and then make a healthy snack that students could make again at home. When teaching...
