Pounds leads Golden Suns to school shooting record

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas Tech set a women's basketball school record on Thursday, connecting on 16 three-pointers to defeat Ouachita Baptist, 89-66. Anissa Pounds led the Golden Suns with seven triples and a game-high 24 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first period featured six lead changes until Pounds scored nine straight points to spark a 13-0 run for the Golden Suns. Five straight points from Ouachita (7-6, 4-3 GAC) ended the quarter with Tech ahead by three.

Arkansas Tech outscored the Lady Tigers 23-13 in the second period behind 60 percent shooting from the field, including 5-10 from deep. The Golden Suns took their first double-digit lead on Pounds' fourth three-pointer of the game.

Two minutes into the second half, Brianna Williams netted a three to start a 14-0 run that put the Golden Suns ahead, 67-38 midway through the third quarter. Tech knocked down five more three-pointers in the period while holding Ouachita to just four field goals.

Tech maintained a lead of at least 23 points throughout the final 10 minutes of play, establishing its largest lead of 29 twice.

The Golden Suns finished the contest shooting just over 50 percent from the floor and 43.2 percent from three-point range. The Lady Tigers were held to 45.3 percent on field goals, including just 5-18 from behind the arc.

NOTABLES

Arkansas Tech extends its win streak to nine games, the eighth time in Head Coach Dave Wilbers' 10 seasons that the Golden Suns have posted a win streak of at least nine games.

Pounds recorded a season-high in points and a career-high in three-pointers made in the victory. 15 of her 24 points came in the first half, in which she netted 5-6 from long range.

Kelsey McClure followed with 15 points and five rebounds, while Cheyenne North and Williams added 10 points each.

Taylor Ely tallied nine points on three triples, and Ryann Goodsell pulled down a game-high seven boards. Kylie Ladd tied a career-high with five steals.

"Once we settled down and figured out the pattern of their offense, I thought we did a real good job defensively."
