Helena woman charged with sex offender registration violations

A Helena woman is facing two felony charges involving sex offender registration violations. Makayla Dawn Redding, 38, of Helena was charged Jan. 26 with (1) providing false/misleading registration information and (2) sex offender living within 2,000 feet of a school or park. Count 1 is punishable by up to five years under supervision of the Department of Corrections and a fine of up to $5,000. Count 2 is punishable by a fine of up to $3,000 and/or one to three years in prison.

According to court documents, Timberlake School had received several complaints about Redding residing at 421 W. Fourth St. in Helena. Alfalfa County Sheriff’s Deputy Gary Mast found her address in the sex offender registry was given as 221 E. Main in Carmen. On Jan. 10 he went to the Carmen address where he knocked, then left a business card in the door asking Redding to call him. He returned on Jan. 11 and again found no one home. Mast asked Deputy Loren Nusser to stop by the residence on Jan. 12, and again no one answered the door.

On Dec. 30, 2016, the sheriff’s office received a statement from Helena Police Chief Jim Dykes who said Redding had been staying at the home of her mother and stepfather for at least a year. Chief Dykes said he talked to the stepfather who said Redding’s mother was sick and she was helping take care of her. The residence in Helena is approximately 317 feet west of the Helena Park.

Redding has posted a $10,000 bond, and her next court appearance if Feb. 1 according to online records.
