Senator Lankford introduces bill to expand free speech for houses of worship and nonprofits

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator James Lankford (R-OK) has introduced the Free Speech Fairness Act, a bill that gives nonprofits and houses of worship the freedom to speak about government or electoral activity without the threat of retribution from the Internal Revenue Service.

Specifically, the Free Speech Fairness Act addresses the shortcomings of the Johnson Amendment, which in 1954 was inserted into the Tax Code by then-Senator Lyndon Johnson. Churches do not pay income taxes. That limits their ability within their walls to enter into political matters. ... The preacher can speak about anything political that he/she wishes to address...just NOT within the walls of the church building(s). The preacher (or any church member) can ask all of the fellow church goers to meet someplace off church grounds. Then, off church grounds, they can discuss anything they want to.
