Storm Drop Season Openers

DURANT, Okla. — Southern Nazarene dropped its first game of the 2017 season with a tough 3-2 loss to Central Missouri in the Southeastern Regional Tournament Friday afternoon.

In the opener Katelyn Brown took the loss. Brown gave up just three runs, one earned, and three hits in 6.0 innings of work. She walked five and struck out six.

UCM struck first as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first Allie Dishinger reached first on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. One run scored on the fielder's choice and a second run came into score because of a throwing error by Kriston Shumaker on the play.

The Crimson Storm got on the board in the top of the second after Central Missouri walked Shumaker with the bases loaded, scoring Cheyenne Reynolds on the play.

UCM answered the Storm's run with one of their own in the bottom of the second as another bases loaded error proved costly for the Storm. Alexis Koop reached first safely on a throwing error by Riley Brown, allowing all the base runners to advance, scoring Makayla Schoonover, to give UCM a 3-1 lead at the end of two innings of play.

SNU got its last run of the game in the sixth inning. Hope Martin led the inning off with a lead off double down the left field line and was able to advance to third after Kai Sanchez laid down a sacrifice bunt. Shumaker grounded out to the pitcher then Sam Smith singled through the left side to score Martin.

Smith finished 1-for-3 in the game with an RBI and a walk.

In the nightcap, the Storm struggled to bring any runs across the plate in a 4-1 loss to St. Edwards Friday evening.

Southern Nazarene got their lone run of the game in the fourth inning. Freer-Christopher led off the top of the fourth with a lead off single, she stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error, and scored on an error by the first baseman.

St. Edwards stuck back in the bottom of the fourth, scoring one run, and again in the sixth, scoring two more runs to give the Hilltoppers the 4-1 victory.

Mahina Sauer got the loss. Sauer pitched five innings, allowed three hits, and one earned run. She also walked one and struck out one. Brooke Tate came in and pitched one inning of relief, and allowed three hits, three runs, and walked one and struck out one.
