Oklahoma court affirms conviction in mother's beating death

February 9, 2017

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals has upheld the life prison sentence of a 21-year-old man who was convicted of beating his mother to death with a shotgun.

The court handed down the decision on Wednesday in the case of Henry David Laird, who was convicted of first-degree murder by a jury in Tulsa County in the Jan. 22, 2013, beating death of 56-year-old Linda Laird.

Prosecutors say Henry Laird used both ends of a shotgun to beat his mother. An autopsy report said Linda Laird suffered 19 wounds to her head and neck.

Among other things, the appeals court rejected claims by Henry Laird that he was denied a fair trial. His attorney, Assistant Public Defender Richard Couch, did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.
