SWOSU Baseball Suffers Weekend Sweep vs Wonder Boys

February 19, 2017

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU dropped both games of their doubleheader against Arkansas Tech on Saturday to open up Great American Conference play 0-3. The Bulldog offense collected just eight hits in 16 innings on the afternoon and now have lost six-consecutive games.

SWOSU will play a mid-week game in Edmond against Central Oklahoma on Wednesday before traveling to Searcy, Arkansas to take on Harding in the second GAC series of the season on Friday and Saturday.

Game 1

Arkansas Tech 7, SWOSU 3

Box Score (html)

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning after Ruben Rodriguez hit a ground ball to the shortstop and was able to get to second base after a throwing error to leadoff the game. Small ball would get him to third and then a groundout to shortstop was able to score the first run of the game.

That would be the high point for the offense until the sixth inning when SWOSU would record their first hit of the day in an inning where they would scratch across another run, but still trail 6-2 at that point. Both teams scored a run in the eighth inning and the Dawgs would go on to lose game one by a final of 7-3. Tech collected 11 hits and utilized two critical Bulldog errors to score three unearned runs and seven in total.

Devin Ring was charged with the loss on the mound after pitching 3.2 innings and giving up five runs but only two earned, falling to 1-1 this season. Jeremy Smith pitched the rest of the way, allowing only two runs in 5.1 innings of work while also striking out four batters.

Game 2

Arkansas Tech 5, SWOSU 3

Box Score (html)

SWOSU starting pitcher Brendan Peitsmeyer allowed a single-run home run and a two-run double down the line in the bases loaded in the start of the second game as SWOSU fell behind 3-0 in the first inning. In the bottom half however, the Dawgs would answer back with two of their own after utilizing a shaky start by the Wonder Boy pitcher who gave up a single to Joshua Santos before walking the bases loaded. SWOSU would get two across in the inning but still trail 3-2 after one.

Tech would score single runs in the third and fourth innings to extend their lead to 5-2, but Rogelio would get one back in the sixth after blasting one out the left center for his second home run of the season. That would conclude the scoring for both squads after the Dawgs went quietly in the seventh and final inning three-up and three-down.

Peitsmeyer went 4.0 innings while Skyler Martin, Stephen Pagendarm and Quintin Dougherty each pitched one inning in relief to hold the Wonder Boys scoreless in the final three ATU frames. Santos would be the only hitter to have two hits in the contest and tied Rafael Otero for most hits on the day after he singled in both games.
