Rodeo Bounces Back Strong at SWOSU

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Southeastern returned to form in its trip to Weatherford, Okla. for the Southwestern Oklahoma State Rodeo, with the women taking the title while the men finished second overall.

The first place team finish is the fourth for the women this season with just two rodeos remaining, while the second place finish for the men is the second runner-up finish and the fourth top three weekend.

Cheyenne Epps and Kylee Bennett turned in the team's two best finishes with Epps taking home the event title in the breakaway roping while Bennett took home the top spot in the goat tying event.

Epps picked up her second individual title in the breakaway this season, stopping the clock with a first round run of 2.8 to split 3rd/4thbefore coming back with a 2.8 in the short go to split 2nd/3rd in the round and win the average.

Cierra Chapman also made the short go in the breakaway and split with Epps with a time of 2.8, but was unable to post a qualified time in the finals which took her out of the average.

In the goat tying Bennett clocked an 8.1 in the first round to win it and then improved upon her time in the finals by clocking a 7.7 to win the event.

Shelby Whiting split 2nd/3rd in the long go with a time of 8.4 and bounced back with a 7.9 in the short go to end up second overall.

Shania Johnston helped the Storm complete the top-three sweep in the event, first turning in an 8.8 in the opening round and then finished with an 8.0 to finish third in the event.

Cierra Chapman turned in a solid finish in the barrel racing event, posting a 17.79 in the first round and finishing with a 17.87 in the finals to finish fourth in the round and fifth in the average.

Bennett also reached the short go in the barrels, turning in a 17.90 in the first round before finishing ninth with a time of 18.13.

Bennett also added a trip to the short go in the team roping with partner Randi Buchanan from Panhandle State as the duo clocked a 9.5 on their first steer, but came up short in the short go which took them out of the average.

On the men's side, Tyler Miles shone as he gave the Storm the men's all-around title at SWOSU for the second-straight year, matching Kolton White's finish in 2016.

Miles placed in the bareback riding competition where he finished fifth in the opening round to reach the finals. There he posted a 58 and finished third in the event as one of just three to finish both rides.

He would also make the finals in the saddle bronc event, posting a 70 on his first ride and finishing third in the long go. He would miss the full eight seconds in the final to miss the overall average.

Dustin Brewster on the other hand would not as he turned in a 64 on his first ride and placed sixth in the first round before finishing with a 71 in the finals to place third in the round and split 2nd/3rd in the average.

In the bull riding competition Wyatt Rogers would open the weekend with a first round ride of 76 to place third, but was unable to complete his short go ride and finished third in the average as it was a tough weekend in general for bull riders with only one contestant completing both rides.

Denver Berry would add his own points towards the men's total after finishing third in the long go in the steer wrestling with a time of 6.1. He would close out his weekend in the event with a mark of 6.5 to finish sixth in the finals and third in the average.

Rogers joined him in the steer wrestling event and clocked a 7.5 on his first run to split 6th in the round and make the finals where he would improve with a 5.8 to split 4th/5th and end up sixth in the average.

The next rodeo on Southeastern's slate is the Fort Hays State Rodeo in Hays, Kan., April 21-23.
