Bison Track Wins Three Championships Friday

 


SHAWNEE – (Friday Results) With one day remaining at the NCCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships, Oklahoma Baptist men lead the field after eight events completed Friday.

OBU posted 68 points at the Hurt Memorial Track to lead second place Greenville at 38 total points. Grace College scored 30 points and is third after Friday's events.

Three Bison men won national championships Friday and OBU advanced to seven Saturday finals.

The Bison took the top two spots in the decathlon, with Andrew Worley winning the event after totaling 6655 points and setting a new NCCAA championship record. He surpassed the previous mark of 6598 set by Cedarville's James Blackwell in 2013.

Hayden Ashley finished runner-up with 5674 points and Kolten Speaks had a seventh place finish at 5027.

Ashley won four of the five events in the decathlon Friday including the discus (115-02), pole vault (14-2), javelin (175-11) and 1500 meters (4:41.87). His performance in the javelin set a new meet record for the decathlon. Worley won the 110 meter hurdles (15.72), and finished second in the pole vault (13-6.25) and javelin (164-9) Friday. Speaks finished runner-up in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:49.83.

Spencer Lashley was crowned champion in the pole vault with a finals height of 14-09.

Jordan Patterson won the triple jump with a distance of 47-9.75.

Phillip Spess took fifth in the pole vault at 14-1.25. Ashley finished seventh in the pole vault (13-7.25) and fourth in the javelin (178-06).

A relay team of Thomas Uglean, Sam Smith, Nathan Crowson and Carlos James finished second in the 4x800 meter relay with a finals time of 7:43.51.

In the final men's event of the day, Jacob Janzen finished third in the 10,000 meters with a time of 32:22.37. Grant Alexander took sixth place in 33:09.45.

Devontrae Young (10.85) and Thiago Dos Santos (10.70) both qualified for Saturday's final in the 100 meters. Young will also compete in the 200 meters final after a preliminaries time of 21.75.

Matthew Giudice qualified for the final in the 400 meters after a Friday time of 49.56. Clayton Honeycutt also advanced to the championship in 50.29.

Four Bison men qualified for the final in the 110 meter hurdles, paced by Brandon Crowley in 14.94. Christopher Walker (14.97), Cayden Spain (15.00) and Dakota Kappelle (15.02) also finished in the top eight to advance to Saturday.

Walker (56.22) and Kappelle (57.74) will also compete in the 400 meter hurdles final.

A team of Dos Santos, Young, Crowley and Brett Shovanec qualified for the final in the 4x100 meter relay after finishing in 42.13.

Giudice, Honeycutt, Crowley and Walker posted the second-fastest preliminaries time in the 4x400 meter relay at 3:19.04 to advance to the final Saturday afternoon.

Saturday's events start with field events at 11 a.m., followed by track events at noon. The NCCAA opening ceremonies are scheduled for 11:45 a.m.
