Bulldogs Snap Losing Streak with Sweep of Southeastern

September 28, 2017

DURANT, Okla. – SWOSU Volleyball snapped a seven-game losing streak on Tuesday night against Southeastern, taking down the Savage Storm in straight sets 27-25, 25-19, and 25-18. The Dawgs used huge late-set rallies in the first two sets to grab a 2-0 advantage before controlling the final set to claim the match victory.

After the 10-10 mark early on in the first set, both teams traded points and led by no more than one until the Savage Storm tried closing it out by taking a three-point lead. Facing three-straight set points trailing 24-21, the Bulldogs showed fight to knot the score back up and then control the remainder of the way. It took SWOSU two extra points, but the Dawgs got it done in the opening frame 27-25 and scored six of the set's final seven points.

The Dawgs again came on strong in the later points to take the second set. Trailing 19-17, SWOSU proceeded to collect the final eight points of the frame and run away with it. Alison Russell recorded three of the final five points to close the set out – all kills from the left side.

It was all SWOSU in the third and final set, controlling the pace nearly the entire way. The Bulldogs took a lead of 14-7 and followed a six-point Southeastern run up by answering with eight out of the next nine points to lead 22-14. The Savage Storm tried one last rally to get within four, but it was answered with a Russell kill and then two SE errors to wrap up the match.

Russell tied for the team lead in kills, collecting nine on the night with a .229 hitting percentage. DeLayni Fine also tallied nine kills, while Danusia Sipa Borgeaud added eight. Kodee Avery assisted on 33 points from the setter spot while also leading the squad at the service line with three aces. Kaitlyn Dillon dug 18 balls on defense with Klemson Lancaster right behind her with 17 digs herself. Jenny Tackett led the Dawgs at the net, blocking three SE swings.

SWOSU now evens up their GAC record at 2-2, and improves to 5-12 overall on the year. They will host another in-state conference foe on Thursday in Weatherford when Oklahoma Baptist comes to town, set for a 7 pm start from inside the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.
