Massie and Whitting Place Top 10, Hillcats Finish 3rd in West Texas Invite

AMARILLO, Texas – Alex Massie and Jess Whitting tied for eighth place and the Rogers State women's golf team finished in third in a field of 12 teams after the final round of the West Texas A&M Fall Invitational on Tuesday (Oct. 3) at the La Paloma Course at Tascosa Country Club. The Hillcats posted a final round score of 310 to go with yesterday's first round total of 303 for the two-round tally of 613.

Massie and Whitting continued to play even in the final round today as the pair registered identical scores of 4-over-par 76. With the 1-over-par 73s shot yesterday, Massie and Whitting finished tied in the eighth spot with two-round totals of 5-over-par 149.

Although the duo shot the same score, each used different ways to get there. Massie tallied 14 pars and only four bogeys to put together the 4-over-par final round. For the two rounds, the junior from Lubbock, Texas led the field with 27 pars and she added two birdies from the first round yesterday. She was the best in the field on par 3s in the two rounds at 1-over-par.

Whitting posted four birdies in her final round to go with five from yesterday to rank second in the field with nine birdies in 36 holes. The Perth, Australia native opened today with a birdie on the first hole, a 431-yard par 5, for the second straight round. However, she struggled on the rest of the front nine as she went 6-over-par in the final six holes. On the back nine, Whitting responded with a 1-under-par performance. She started with a birdie on No. 10 and added her third birdie of the round on No. 15. After back-to-back bogeys on 16 and 17, Whitting concluded her round with a birdie on No. 18 to match Massie at 4-over-par 76 in today's round.

Senior Mica Eastin finished just outside the top 10 in 13th place with a two-round score of 9-over-par 153. After a 4-over-par 76 in the first round yesterday, Eastin carded a score of 5-over-par 77 today to earn a tie for the 13th spot. The senior totaled three birdies in her final round along with six bogeys and a double. She ranked high in the field with 20 pars in the 36-hole tournament.

Sydney Murray shot a 9-over-par 81 for the second straight day. She was 6-over on the front nine, but improved to 3-over on the back, including her only birdie today on No. 15, a 412-yard par 5. The sophomore tallied a 36-hole score of 18-over-par 162.

Freshman Jessica Green ended her first-ever collegiate tournament with a 9-over-par 81 today in the final round. With the 86 shot yesterday, Green finished at 23-over-par 167. She ranked toward the top of the field with six birdies, including three to start the first round yesterday.

Host West Texas A&M won the team title with a two-round score of 581. Angelo State's Kamryn Cummings went 5-under-par today in the final round to pull away for a three-shot win at 4-under-par 140.

The Hillcats continue their fall season next Monday (Oct. 9) at the Dallas Baptist University Golf Classic at The Golf Club of Dallas in Dallas, Texas.
