Late Goal Lifts Bison over Peacocks

October 20, 2017

SHAWNEE – A late goal from a goal-mouth scramble helped stop a two-match skid as Oklahoma Baptist dropped Upper Iowa, 3-2, on Thursday night in Shawnee.

After falling behind inside the first eight minutes, Alejandro Castillo scored off a set play from a free kick to tie the score. Jesus Andrade slotted the ball to his midfield running mate to restart play after the foul, and Castillo put it past the UIU goalkeeper with a long-range blast from the right wing in the 28th minute.

Following halftime, an individual moment of brilliance from Thiago Dos Santos put OBU up 2-1 in the 60th minute. The winger picked up the ball in the middle of the pitch and dribbled past several Peacock defenders before firing home to the lower left corner. Unfortunately, UIU rallied quickly, bringing the score level at 22 in the 67th minute.

Though the Bison pressed for the winning goal, it wasn't until the 82nd minute that they found the go-ahead score. Oklahoma Baptist earned a corner kick that Stormy Arledge whipped into the box. David Estrada pounced for a finish to the upper left corner after UIU failed to clear the ball and OBU was back in the lead. Upper Iowa would attempt one final shot in the last minute of action, but the shot sailed high and the Bison claimed the victory.

Parker Lawter earned his first start in goal after four matches on the bench, saving one shot as he picked up his second win of the season.

Oklahoma Baptist (5-7-1, 2-3 GAC) returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 21 when they face Southwest Baptist at the OBU Soccer Complex at 3 p.m.
