Third Quarter Woes Cost Henderson in 80-72 Loss to SWOSU

November 19, 2017

WEATHERFORD, Okla. — Henderson State hung with Southwestern Oklahoma State for the first 20 minutes on Saturday, but were out-scored 26-13 and shot just 20 percent from the field in the third quarter as SWOSU pulled away to defeat the Reddies 80-72.

After playing lights-out in the first half, and particularly in the second quarter, where HSU out-scored the Lady Bulldogs 23-14 to tie the game 40-40 at the halftime break, the Reddies could not find their rhythm in the third, going 4-for-20 from the field in the period and turning it over six times.

Trailing 66-53 entering the fourth, Hailey Estes and Haleigh Henson both hit 3-pointers to bring the deficit to single-digits, but it was short-lived, as the Lady Bulldogs responded with an 8-2 spurt to stretch their lead back out to 15 points. Henderson out-played SWOSU the rest of the way, but could not put together a big run late to overtake the Lady Bulldog lead, as the third quarter proved to be the difference in the game.

Estes was the offensive catalyst for the Reddies on the afternoon, finishing with 22 points and six 3-pointers, while Pink Jones had 16 and Henson 14 for HSU. After shooting 42 percent from the field in the first half, Henderson shot just 24.3 percent in the second, hitting on just 9-of-37 shots. Henderson had 17 offensive rebounds in the game but had 21 turnovers to just 11 for the Lady Bulldogs.

SWOSU put the Reddies in an early hole by jumping out to a 9-0 lead in the game's opening moments, but despite trailing 26-17 at the end of one, Henderson locked down defensively in the second quarter and held the Lady Bulldogs to just 20 percent shooting in the period. Reigning GAC Player of the Year Hailey Tucker jump-started the pivotal third quarter swing for the Lady Bulldogs with 12 points in the period after scoring just seven in the first half. Tucker finished with a team-high 23 for SWOSU.

The loss drops Henderson to 1-3 on the season and 0-2 in GAC play. The Reddies return to action on Nov. 28 at 6:30 p.m. for their home-opener against Paul Quinn College in the Duke Wells Center.
