Study: Hub-and-spoke system effective in treating addiction

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — A study by the Vermont Department of Health indicates the state's hub-and-spoke system is effective in treating opioid addiction.

The Rutland Herald reports the hub-and-spoke model combines local treatment centers, or hubs, with help from doctors, or spokes, to support patients experiencing withdrawal symptoms.

The Vermont Center on Behavior and Health at the University of Vermont conducted the study with 100 patients. Twenty-five percent of patients had reported overdosing at the start of the study.
