Reddies Fight Past Oklahoma Baptist 77-71 to Claim 10th GAC Victory

February 2, 2018

SHAWNEE, Okla. — Henderson State put five players in double figures on Thursday evening and held off Oklahoma Baptist's second half rally to get past the Lady Bison 77-71 and notch its 10th Great American Conference win of the season.

The Reddies (14-6, 10-4) were all over OKBU at the start and used two baskets apiece from Blu Jones and Hailey Estes to jump out to a 12-0 advantage in the game's opening moments. The Lady Bison (11-9, 6-8) trimmed the lead down to 20-13 by the end of the first quarter, but Henderson kept the pressure on and out-scored OKBU 19-13 in the second to build a 39-26 advantage at the break.

OKBU began to make a push in the third quarter, trimming a once-18 point lead down to five, 51-46. Henderson responded, though, and ended the period with a Bree Bossier layup and a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Estes to regain momentum and a 10-point cushion entering the fourth.

In the final period, the Lady Bison continued to rally, but each time OKBU came close, the Reddies had an answer. Haleigh Henson provided two of those answers with back-to-back long 3-pointers after OKBU had cut the lead down to six, while Pink Jones got an and-1 to go and both Blu Jones and Bossier finished tough layups at the rim. After keeping the Lady Bison at arms length for most of the quarter, some late Reddies' turnovers helped OKBU make things interesting and cut the lead down to four in the game's final seconds. Henderson was clutch at the line though, going 7-for-8 in the last minute, to ice the game and claim the win.

Pink Jones led the Reddies with 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists on 7-of-13 shooting, while Estes chipped in 16 points, 13 of which came in the first half, and six boards. Bossier continued her strong play, finishing with 14 points and nine rebounds, which marks the fourth straight contest she has scored in double figures. Henson chipped in 13 points, eight of which came in the fourth quarter, while Blu Jonesadded 11 points and five rebounds to clinch her third straight double figure scoring game.

As a team, the Reddies out-rebounded OKBU 40-30, out-scored them in the paint 38-24 and held them to 39.7 percent shooting from the floor while shooting 50.9 percent themselves.

Henderson returns to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when it faces Southern Nazarene in Bethany, Oklahoma.
