Reddies Softball Opens Charger Chill Out with a Pair of Wins

Henderson State opened the Charger Chill Out with wins over Delta State and Christian Brothers, Thursday in Huntsville, Ala.

The Reddies began the day with a 4-3 victory over Delta State before shutting out Christian Brothers 10-0 to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Against the Lady Statesmen, the Reddies banged out 10 hits including two doubles by Bethany Allen, while Madie Green and Ashleigh Erb had two hits each.

The Reddies took a quick 2-0 lead scoring a pair of runs in the first-inning as Allen led off the game with a double and Alexis Morton walked to put two runners on the corners. With both runners in scoring position, Green then laced a single up the middle to score both runners.

Delta State, 3-4 on the year, tied the score in the bottom of the inning, but the Reddies regained the lead in the top of the second as Allen smashed her second double of the game which scored Olivia Trapp who was hit by a pitch earlier in the frame.

Again the Lady Statesman tied the score with a run in the fourth, but Henderson responded in the top half of the fifth as the Reddies loaded the bases with the help of a singles by Green and Selena Mendoza.

Kailey Reese brought home the eventual game-winning run with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Green.

Delta State threatened in the bottom of the seventh having runners on first and second with one-out, but the Reddies defense turned a double-pay to end the game.

Michelle Sorensen improved to 3-0 on the year as the senior from Sherwood, Ark. went the distance, striking out five batters while surrendering six hits.

Against Christian Brothers, Henderson collected 14 hits with five Reddies having multiple hits.

Kaitlyn Felder was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with four runs batted in. The sophomore from Cabot had a double and a home run in the contest.

Green, Allen, Trapp, and Reese all had two hits. Green collected a pair of doubles with 3 RBI, while Allen had her third double of the day.

Henderson will continue the tournament on Friday with a 2 p.m. contest against North Alabama, followed by a matchup with Mississippi College at 4 p.m.
