Cox Gets Milestone Win in Split

March 11, 2018

MONTICELLO, Ark. – Oklahoma Baptist Coach Bobby Cox picked up his 1,325th career win in the first game of a doubleheader split at Arkansas-Monticello Friday.

OBU won the opener 8-7 before falling in the nightcap 6-3.

With the win in the opener Cox has more career wins than any other Division II baseball coach. He is not recognized as the record holder because of the percentage of games won while OBU was a NAIA member.

The Bison scored four runs in the top of the first in the opener. Zane Gelphman singled in Brett Berghammer, P.J. Harris added a two-run single and Jake Gozzo added a sacrifice fly.

With the score tied at 4-4, Gelphman added an RBI single in the sixth for a short-lived 5-4 lead. UAM scored three in the sixth to take a 7-5 advantage.

Juan Gonzalez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Harris tacked on a two-run single to put the Bison ahead 8-7 in the eighth.

OBU had 11 hits, including three by Gelphman and two apiece by Harris and Brett Bloomfield.

Mychal Yarbor allowed one hit in four scoreless innings of relief to get the win.

OBU scored one in the first inning of the second game when Breghammer tripled and scored on a ground out by Bloomfield.

Harris added a solo home run in the second for a 2-0 lead.

The Weevils took a 3-2 lead in the third.

OBU knotted the game in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by Gelphman, but Monticello answered with three runs in the home half.

Zach Fowler (3-2) took the loss.

The Bison had six hits, including two by Bloomfield.

The teams meet again Saturday at noon to determine a series winner.
