Bugs outlast Lawton Ike; fall to Irish

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Alva High School baseball team locked up with 5A Lawton Eisenhower in a 13-12 run fest on Friday in Midwest City at the 2018 Bill Tipton Classic.

The victory set up a matchup at Bishop McGuiness on Saturday. After an early 2-0 lead against the Irish, McGuinness pulled away for a 10-5 win.

With two outs in the top of the first against the Irish, and Zeth Warren and T.W. Beiswanger standing on base following singles, Max Parsons sent a pitch to center field for a hit and to plate both runners for the lead.

McGuinness responded and tied the game in the bottom of the opening inning. However, after drawing a walk to start the second inning, Dalton Rose stole second base, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball with Warren at the plate to make it 3-2.

The home team broke the game open in the bottom of the third with six runs on three hits and two Goldbug errors.


In the top of the fifth, the Bugs added another run as Dalton Hess tripled in Beiswanger, who started the inning with a single up the middle. Stanton Earnest added the final run of the game with a shot to left for a home run.

Beiswanger and Parsons led the Bugs offense with two hits apiece, with Beiswanger driving in two runs.

Cade Madsen was the starting pitcher for the Bugs, striking out two Irish batters in three innings of work. Braeden Cook threw the last three innings off the mound, allowing just one hit.

The loss dropped the Goldbugs record to 15-11 this season. They will be back in action Tuesday afternoon when they host Watonga at Crenshaw Field. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.


Bugs outlast Ike

An early lead after the first two innings of play was enough for the Goldbugs in the Friday contest against Lawton Eisenhower at Carl Albert High School in Midwest City.

Alva jumped all over Lawton Ike in the first inning with six runs, started by a RBI double off the bat of Beiswanger to plate Jacob Faulkner. Three batters later, a wild pitch allowed Beiswanger to cross the plate to give the Bugs a 2-0 lead.

In the same at bat, Hess drew a walk to load the bases. Rose followed and ripped a double to center on the first pitch to clear the bases and make it 5-0 in favor the Bugs. Later in the inning, Dominic Minjares became the sixth run to score when he scored on a wild pitch.


Parsons started the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with the Bugs already leading 6-2. Earnest led the inning off by reaching on an error and swiping second to move into scoring position. The steal set up a line drive single to bring in Parsons.

Later in the inning, Warren singled on a grounder through the left side with the bases loaded to push in Hess and Rose who reached on a single and a fielder’s choice, respectively, to extended the Goldbug lead to 9-2.

Ike battled back to cut the Alva lead back to 9-7 heading to the third. After Beiswanger scored on an error off the bat of Hess, the Eagles put up four runs in the bottom of the fourth.

With one hit, the Bugs regained the lead in the top half fifth inning as Parsons singled to right field with the bases loaded to score Faulker and Beiswanger. On the first pitch of the next at bat, Hess single to left to bring home Earnest from third to extend the lead to 13-11.

The Goldbug opponents added their final run of the game in the fifth inning.

Four pitchers, Rose, Beiswanger, Kory Faulkner and Jacob Faulkner combined for seven strikeouts off the mound. The Faulkner brothers didn’t allow a hit in the final two innings of the game.

Parsons had a big game with two hits and three runs batted in. Hess drove in two runners on two hits, and Beiswanger had two hits, an RBI and scored three times. Earnest also scored three times in the game.
