Oklahoma school district sued over child abuse case

PERRY, Okla. (AP) — A family is accusing an Oklahoma school district of protecting a sexual predator and calling children liars when they said a former teacher's aide molested them.

The Oklahoman reports that the lawsuit against Perry Public Schools was filed Monday by the parents of a victim of 87-year-old Arnold Cowen. The lawsuit accuses the district of hiding abuse by the teacher's aide from the state Department of Human Services, police and parents.

Cowen is serving 10 years in prison after pleading guilty in February to molesting 10 girls at Upper Elementary School. The district says it wasn't "deliberately indifferent to the allegations involving Mr. Cowen and the minor plaintiffs" and that it took corrective measures after learning of his conduct.

This is the second lawsuit to be brought against the district.
