US regulators delay Utah study of marijuana effects on pain

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah's plan to study the effects of marijuana on pain has been delayed because of slow approval from the federal government to ship the drug to Utah researchers.

The Deseret News reports the study from the Utah Science Technology and Research Initiative and University of Utah professors was originally expected to be completed by March this year.

The research initiative's Executive Director Ivy Estabrooke says she hopes the marijuana will arrive from its U.S-government approved source within a few weeks and allow the four-month study to get underway.

State lawmakers set aside $500,000 for the study after saying they wanted to see more research on the drug's effects before approving a medical marijuana law.

The study's results could be released just around the time Utah voters in November will consider a ballot initiative to pass a medical pot law.
