Volleyball: Golden Suns outlast Tigers

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Ouachita surrendered its first loss in the Great American Conference against Arkansas Tech 3-0. The Tigers are now 2-1 in GAC play while the Golden Suns improve to 2-1 as well.

Set one found Ouachita (11-4, 2-1 GAC) with its best hitting percentage of the match at .170 in a 26-24 set loss to the Golden Suns. The Tigers led 18-15, but a late 6-1 run pushed the Golden Suns ahead. Tabatha Huckabee (North Richland Hills, Texas) recorded back-to-back kills to tie the match at 24 apiece, but Arkansas Tech (8-6, 2-1 GAC) was able to capitalize and edge past the Tigers for the first set.

The Tigers found themselves in trouble during set two down 9-4 early on. Arkansas Tech sparked another surge to lead by 11 points 23-12. Despite a spark of life by the Tigers, the Golden Suns got two more points to win the second set 25-16.

For the third and final set, the Golden Suns made an 8-2 run to begin the match, but a few points later the Tigers moved past Arkansas Tech 11-10 with a 7-1 run of their own. Ouachita hung around the rest of the match until the Golden Suns recorded four straight points to close out the match 25-20.

Katie Camp (Plano, Texas) recorded her second double-double of the season with 11 kills and 10 digs. The Great American Conference leader in assists, Stormi Leonard (Decatur, Texas) averaged just above 10 assists per set finishing with 32 on the match and was three digs away from her own double-double.
