Repair of deadly weir near Topeka is on hold because of cost

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Topeka's government is considering alternatives to fix a low dam on Kansas River where three people have drowned since 2007.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports city officials intended to start work on the concrete weir last month. But the cost estimate of $4.4 million was nearly $2.5 million more than the city expected.

Larry Wolgast, a member of the Topeka and Shawnee County Riverfront Authority, said the city's government is considering options that might allow for the project to start next year, including finding additional bidders and/or ways to reduce the project'...
