Men's Tennis: Southeastern's Anez, Nice Lead Way at ITA Regional

EDMOND, Okla. – Southeastern men's tennis opened up the fall season of competition with an impressive run at the ITA DII Central Regional Championships held in Edmond, Okla.

Carlos Anez was the tourney's top-seeded male player and paced the Savage Storm who racked up 13 singles wins between six players and added six more doubles victories.

Anez collected three singles victories to earn a trip to the semifinals in the singles bracket.

He opened with a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 in over Washburn's Raul Dicu in the round of 64, and followed with a win over Southwest Baptist's Marcel Castello in the round of 32, 6-3, 6-0.

He reached the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 win over ninth-seeded Gyory Agoston, also from SBU.

He was upended in the semifinals in and epic match against Northwest Missouri State's Franco Oliva, 6-3, 6-7, 6-7. Oliva would go on to take the individual title.

Anez and his doubles partner Ondrej Nice also sat atop the bracket in doubles play, earning a trip to the finals.

The pair opened play in the round of 16 after a bye and downed Lindenwood's Hector Horcajada and Logan Orr 8-6.

Anez and Nice followed with a quarterfinal victory over eighth-seeded Max Sanajo and Raul Caballero, 8-4.

They would reach the finals after a 6-3, 6-4 win over fourth-seeded Fabien Calloud and Rahul Manoah from NWMSU in the semifinals.

In the finals the duo would face second-seeded Alejandro Valarezo Plaza and Paul Haase from Washburn and would come out on the short side of a tiebreaker set, falling 6-2, 4-6, 0-1.

Nice made his own run in singles, reaching the quarterfinals as the seven seed, starting with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Joe Sawatzke from Auguistana.

He followed it up with a round of 32 win over Diego Pierola from Harding, 6-3, 6-1, and then survived a tie breaker with Oklahoma Baptist's Matias Le Fort, winning 6-3, 2-6, 1-0.

However, he would fall in the quarters to eventual finals Plaza from Washburn, 6-2, 6-3.

Sandro Lena entered the singles bracket as the No. 13 seed and picked up a 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 win in the opener over Southern Arkansas' Raymond Garcia.

He would then tack on a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ouachita Baptist's Carlos Solorazano to reach the round of 16 where he would fall to fourth-seeded Calloud.

Benji Finet came into the bracket as the 19th seed and opened with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Horcajada from Lindenwood and followed that with a sin in the second round over Juan Moncada from Ouachita Baptist, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0. He would fall however in the round of 16 to Caballero who would go on to the semifinals.

Danrich Kruger was the 25th seed an picked up a 6-1, 6-1 in in his opener over Oklahoma Baptist's Andres Graterol, but fell in the round of 32 to eighth-seeded Haase.

Juan Scoppetta came in as an underdog and the No. 50 seed, but opened play with a 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 win over 15th seeded Kevin Andrusch from Oklahoma Baptist, and tacked on a 6-0, 6-4 win in the second round over Ouachita Baptist's 18th-seeded Nair Adi before falling to eventual finalist Plaza.

In doubles play, Scoppetta and Lena entered as the sixth seed and picked up an 8-4 first-round win over Juan Albin and Michele Gaspari, but were upended in the second round in an 8-6 loss.

Finet and Kruger paired as the 26th-seeded duo and picked up an upset in the first round, toppling Harding's seventh-seeded duo of Arthur Bellan and Morgan Salvan 8-6.

They added an 8-4 win in the round of 16 over 10th seeded Agustin Velasco and Oliva from NWMSU before bowing out in the quarters, 9-7, to the eventual doubles champions.
