Men's Soccer: SNU Loses Heartbreaker in Double OT

SHAWNEE, Okla. — In a quest to win three straight Great American Conference games for the first time in school history, Southern Nazarene lost a heartbreaker in double-overtime 2-1 to rival Oklahoma Baptist on Tuesday night.

The Crimson Storm (3-8, 2-1 GAC) leave Bison Hill having lost two of their last three matches on the season in extra time. The Bison (2-10, 1-2 GAC) picked up their first conference win of the season on their senior night as they outshot SNU 28-27 for the match. The Storm put nine shots on goal while OBU landed 11 on target.

Angel Lopez fired a team-high five shots for Southern Nazarene as the freshman put two of those on goal. Marcel Joseph and Brock Massie each tallied four shots with one on goal as Joseph finished with an assist while Massie had the lone goal.

Cutter Smith, Brayden Lovelace, Joao Padovan, Ricardo Vargas, and Cristian Hernandez each finished with a shot on goal for SNU while senior Colton Hadlock recorded a season-high nine saves in goal for the Crimson Storm.

After neither team got on the board in the first half, both teams were able to score a goal in the exact same minute in the second half. Oklahoma Baptist took the 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute courtesy of Sean Grilley. 37 seconds later, Joseph connected with Massie who scored his first goal of the season to tie the game 1-1.

Both teams got a couple of shots on goal in the closing minutes of regulation but the match was pushed to extra time. After neither team scored in the first 10-minute overtime period, the game entered the second overtime and the Bison scored the game-winning goal in the 107th minute.

Southern Nazarene returns to Wes Harmon Field on Saturday afternoon for a non-conference match with Upper Iowa, before hitting the road next week for more GAC play.
