Volleyball: Reddies Fall 3-2 in Heartbreaker at Harding

October 26, 2018

SEARCY, Ark. — Courtney Bolf, Zuzana Ondruskova, Taylor Scalzi and Abby Blackburn all recorded double-doubles for the Reddies, but it wasn't enough, as Henderson State fell on the road to Harding 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 25-14, 20-25, 15-11). Harding, with the win, remains perfect at home. This was the first home match in which the Lady Bisons were forced to play five sets this season. The loss snaps a four-match winning streak for the Reddies, who would have tied Harding at the top of the GAC standings with a victory.

Henderson (23-5, 11-3) will look to get back on track on Saturday when Lane College visits the Duke Wells Center at 2 p.m.

SET ONE

Three-straight errors from Harding helped the Reddies jump out to a 3-0 lead, but the Lady Bisons came back quickly to tie the score at 6-6. The Reddies used kills from Bolf and Hartmann to take a 10-6 lead, forcing the Lady Bisons into a timeout. After the break, Henderson kept its four-point lead intact as the set progressed up to 22-18. Harding made things interesting with a 5-1 run to tie it 23-23, but an error from HU, followed by an ace from Scalzi, sealed the frame for HSU, 25-23.

SET TWO

The Lady Bisons won the first two points of the set before a kill and an ace from Ondruskova helped HSU take a 3-2 lead. With the score 4-4, the Reddies went on a 7-2 run, highlighted by two Bolf kills, moving the score to 11-6 in HSU's favor. Harding answered quickly, however, behind a 6-2 run that brought it within one, 13-12. Another quick spurt from HU put the Lady Bisons in front 18-17. The Reddies tied the match at multiple occasions down the stretch, but could not take the lead as Harding took the set 25-23.

SET THREE

Harding used their second set momentum to jump out to a 4-0 lead in the third frame. The Reddies quickly pulled within one, 5-4, but another 5-0 spurt from the Lady Bisons had the Reddies in a 10-5 hole. The Reddies were unable to find their footing for the rest of the set, as Harding took the lead in the match with a 25-14 win.

SET FOUR

In the fourth frame, it was the Reddies who got out to a quick five-point lead, 8-3. After Harding cut the deficit to three, a 7-0 run highlighted by three Ondruskova kills gave HSU a 17-7 advantage. Henderson got to set-point with a comfortable 24-15 lead, but the Lady Bisons wouldn't go quietly. Harding nabbed five-straight points to move the score to 24-20 before a kill from Ondruskova tied the match 25-20 and forced a deciding set.

SET FIVE

Harding won three of the first four points of the final frame, but the Reddies stormed back with a 4-1 run to take a 5-4 lead. The match went back-and-forth as the deciding set progressed, but the Reddies held on to their tenuous advantage with the score 9-8. The lead would not last long, however, as Harding took the next four points to seize a 13-9 lead. Back-to-back points from the Reddies cut the lead to 13-11, but Harding scored the final two in quick succession to take the set, 15-11, and the match, 3-2.
