Henderson Falls in Saturday Doubleheader to No. 13 SAU

February 17, 2019

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State could not get its offense going on Saturday against No. 13 Southern Arkansas and fell in both games of the doubleheader at Clyde Berry Field.

The Reddies (3-6, 0-3) will travel to Russellville, Arkansas, next weekend to face off with Arkansas Tech in a single game Friday at 6 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.

Game Two: Southern Arkansas 9, Henderson State 0

The Muleriders struck early in the opening game of the day with two runs in the first and another in the second to go up 3-0.

The Reddies had an opportunity in the bottom of the fourth, when singles from Danny Mitchell Jr. and Blake Wynn gave them two baserunners. Joe Myers came up with HSU's third single of the inning to seemingly load the bases with two outs, but Wynn was caught in a run down between third base and home while trying to score and was tagged out to end the inning.

SAU capitalized on the momentum and broke the game open in the fifth by stringing together six runs on five hits to extended its lead to 9-0. Four of the six runs were unearned and came after a Reddies' throwing error that would have ended the inning.

Brandon Pollock finished 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Henderson at the plate. The Reddies had seven hits, but no extra-base hits, in the loss.

Game Three: Southern Arkansas 5, Henderson State 1

The Reddies scratched the first run of the game in the third. Back-to-back singles to start the inning from Pollock and Danny Spradlin, along with a sacrifice bunt from Mitchell Jr., gave Henderson two runners in scoring position with just one out and Wynn came through, as he delivered a sac fly to centerfield to score Pollock and put HSU up 1-0.

A single, a passed ball, and a two-out double tied it up at 1-1 for SAU in the fifth. The Muleriders moved the go-ahead run to third base with two outs in the sixth, but Henderson escaped with the tie intact as Spencer Taack forced a ground out to end the inning.

The wheels came off for the Reddies in seventh, however, as two errors and four wild pitches helped SAU plate four runs to take the lead 5-1 and get the series sweep.

Drake Salsman pitched well for Henderson in his first conference start and allowed just one earned run on three hits in 5.2 innings. After issuing a walk in the first inning, Salsman sat down the next 11 batters he faced in a row, which included retiring the side in the second, third, and fourth.
