Blackface incident prompts school cultural training

SIMSBURY, Conn. (AP) — Officials with a Connecticut school say staff has held group discussions with students, and administrators have participated in cultural competency training since two students were seen on social media in what appeared to be blackface.
Simsbury Superintendent Matt Curtis says more training will follow after the incident involving two Simsbury High School students circulated online in late January.
His statements came during a school board meeting with residents and members of the local NAACP on Tuesday.
The students received one-day, in-school suspensions.
At least one attendee questioned whether the students intended to be hurtful with the photo.
Greater Hartford NAACP President Maxien Robinson-Lewin says whether it was intentional or not, the students should face harsher punishment.
Curtis says a full review of the school's curriculum will be undertaken.
