Soldier's family returns World War II flag back to Japan

 


TULSA, Okla. (AP) — After the big red sun in the center, the next thing you can't miss about the flag is the writing on it.

"It's in Japanese, that much was always obvious," said Chris Armstrong of the numerous ink inscriptions.

"Unfortunately, we never thought to ask my dad about it — how he came into possession of the flag or anything."

When Armstrong's late father, World War II veteran Lowell Armstrong of Tulsa arrived home in 1945, the Japanese flag had been among the items he brought with him, the Tulsa World reported.
