Off-duty officer shoots self in encounter on LA-area road

SAN MARINO, Calif. (AP) — An off-duty police officer accidentally shot himself while driving during an encounter with another driver who turned out to be an off-duty sheriff's deputy, authorities said Monday. The officer was listed in stable condition.

Police said "neither party knew each other or was aware they were members of a law enforcement agency."

The San Marino Police Department initially said the driver of a Subaru had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a road rage incident on Sunday but amended that Monday to say road rage was not involved.
