Ladybugs now 11-0 with win over Perry at Wheat Capital

The Alva Ladybugs continued their winning streak Thursday night with a 65-51 victory over Perry in the first round of the Wheat Capital Tournament in Chisholm. The Alva team is still missing Rianna Clark who hurt her knee in a game at Perry just before the holiday break. She's not expected to return this week.

The Ladybugs went on an 11 point scoring run to start the game before Perry got on the scoreboard. The Lady Maroons whittled the lead down to four at 16-12 at the end of one quarter. Perry pulled within three points in the second quarter, but Alva led 32-25 at the half.

The Lady Maroons pulled within three points of Alva in the third quarter which ended with Alva leading 51-40. Alva continued to dominate the game in the fourth for the final 65-51 win.

Acacia Charles put the first four points on the board for Alva. Payton Jones was fouled as she went for the basket. She hit one of two chances to put Alva up 5-0. Lexie Reihm also went to the free throw line, hitting one of two shots. Jones hit a deep wing left three, and Reihm added another basket for an 11-0 lead.

Mabrie Shields went to the free throw stripe, making both shots to put Perry on the scoreboard. Jones followed with a three. Then Kennedy Williams hit a basket for Perry to make the score 14-4. Jones was fouled on a layup and made both shots from the line. Perry was next at the free throw line where Savannah Chenowith made both tries. Alva now led 16-6. Perry added the final points of the quarter on baskets by Braylee Dale and Sarah Hamilton. The Ladybugs led 16-12 at the end of the first period.

The defense ruled the start of the second period as neither team scored for a time. Then Jones hit a three-pointer for Alva. Dale went to the free throw line and added one for Perry. Dale was fouled again by Reihm, her third. Reihm went to the bench, and Dale missed both free throws. Alva led 19-13.

Jones made a basket for Alva. Perry scored three points on a basket and free throw by Williams. Chloe Durkee sank a trey for Alva. Williams went to the line for Perry on a lane violation call and added one more point. Alva now led 24-22. Jones hit another three then was fouled and made one of two from the free throw stripe. Josie West made her only basket of the night followed by a Dale free throw.

Dale fouled Ladybug Aspen Warren who went to the line, making one of two chances. Freshman Jaedyn Williams capped off the Alva points with a deep three at the buzzer for the halftime score of 32-25.

Jones began the second half with a nice three-pointer. Perry's Chenowith went to the foul line and hit both shots. K. Williams added a Perry layup. Then Shields was fouled on shooting and hit one of two tries. Suddenly the lead was narrowed to five with Alva leading 35-30. The Ladybugs made three attempts before Jones got a layup to fall through. Dale answered with a three-pointer followed by two from Shields to put the Lady Maroons within three. Alva now led 39-36.

Reihm widened the gap with a three-pointer, but K. Williams hit two for Perry. Reihm landed another three answered by Shields with two. Perry was within five at 45-40. Jones was fouled on a layup and went to the line, making one of two attempts. After a missed basket by Perry, Jones hit a layup for two. Durkee landed a three-pointer, and Alva led 54-40 at the end of the third quarter.

Just like in the third, Jones started off with a triple in the fourth. Perry's attempt at a basket failed, and Jones added two more points. Durkee hit a trey, and Alva led 59-40. Following a timeout, Dale put two points on the board. Jones committed her fourth foul and went to the Alva bench. Dale hit another basket, was fouled and made the third point on a free throw. Alva's lead was cut to 59-45.

J. Williams scored a basket for Alva followed by a basket from K. Williams for Perry. Reihm added two Ladybug points, and Chenowith added two for the Lady Maroons. Alva led 63-49. After four successive tries at baskets by Perry, Alva took possession but couldn't score on two attempts. With seconds left, Dale went for a layup. She missed but was fouled and made both free throws for the final of 65-51 in Alva's favor.

Scoring

Jones had a great night for Alva with 31 points and 12 rebounds. Reihm was next with 15 points followed by Durkee with nine, J. Williams with five, Charles with four and Warren with one.

Dale led the Perry scoring with 17 followed by Williams with 11, Chenowith 10 and Shields with seven.

The Ladybugs are now 11-0 for the season. The Alva team will face the winner of the Fairview vs Chisholm matchup with tipoff 6:30 p.m. tonight (Friday) in Chisholm.
