Verna was born on July 12, 1935, to Vernon Stanley and Laura "Alice" Harris northeast of Helena and passed from this life on February 27, 2020. On July 16, 1952, Verna married John Powell at the Helena Christian Church. Three sons were born to this union: Johnny, Vernon and Frank.

Verna was a certified nursing assistant, working over 30 years at the Great Plains Care Center in Helena. She also helped John on the farm with hog production and in haying season.
