Wichita officer will not face charges in fatal shooting

April 22, 2020

A Wichita police officer who fatally shot a man during an attempted arrest in January 2019 will not face charges, Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett said Tuesday.

Bennett said the officer who shot Geoffrey Morris fired in self-defense because he believed he was in danger of being struck by Morris' car.

Officers were trying to arrest Morris on parole violations and warrants for failure to appear on two pending cases when they surrounded his car on Jan. 10, 2019. Officers were aware of his criminal history, that he had carried a gun in the past and had said he did not want to return to prison, Bennett said.

Bennett said Morris backed up, hitting one officer's car, and then drove toward another officer, who fired several shots. Morris died two days later at a hospital.

The officer's name has not been released.
