As we saw recently, 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution extending the right to vote to American women.

With the right to vote, of course, comes the right to hold political office. Interestingly, however, decades passed before many women held high elective (or appointive) positions in the United States.

Between 1920 and 1974 for example, exactly three women served as state governors. In the latter year, Ella Grasso was elected governor of Connecticut, the first female governor who did not follow her husband into that office.
