Merry Christmas – 2020 version!

December 25, 2020

Today is Dec. 25 – Christmas! Like many people, Christmas is my favorite holiday. Also, like many people, I find the 2020 version of that holy day to be different from what is “normal.”

As the Covid-19 pandemic rages throughout the country, many Americans are staying home and having scaled-down events. Everyone I know is hoping that things will return to normal in 2021. They are certainly not normal this year.

Christmas 2020 will be remembered for years as the one in which the family did not get together – or the one where some family tradition was canceled, modified or scheduled for another time.

Some people are traveling less than usual. Some are shopping less than usual. Some stores are open fewer hours and canceling appearances by Santa Claus. Yes, Christmas is different this year.

And, of course, it is not just Americans who are altering their plans. Just within the last week, the prime minister of Great Britain has called on citizens of his country to cancel family gatherings. Similar drastic measures are being mandated or encouraged throughout the world.

But while Christmas this year may not be like Christmases past, the most important thing is that it is not canceled. No one can cancel Christmas!

We may have government leaders tell us not to congregate. We may have medical experts encouraging us to avoid family get-togethers. But Christmas is still Christmas – no matter what!

As always, Christmas means different things to different people. We can see this phenomenon in practice by looking at two traditions of the holiday: music and cards.

Some Christmas songs and cards emphasize its religious aspects. Others feature snow men and women, jingle bells, and Santa and his reindeer. Regardless, Christmas means having a joyful time.

No matter how anyone chooses to celebrate Christmas, it almost always includes thinking about friends and family members – those who are still alive and those who are not.

That’s what I am going to do today, and I am going to enjoy it! I hope you do, too! Merry Christmas!
