Waynoka woman charged with vehicle theft

A Waynoka man told police he was letting his daughter stay with him and use his vehicle after she got out of jail, but he did not give her permission to take the vehicle and not return it.

Court records show on May 29 at approximately 5:15 a.m., Waynoka Police Officer Ian Thorp received a call about a vehicle stolen from Missouri St. He went to the location and talked with the owner, Buddy Shelton. Shelton said he found a note from his daughter Meagann Mason on Tuesday, May 25, stating she had taken the vehicle and would be back the next day. However, she did not return.

Shelton made contact with his daughter on Friday by text message informing her he needed the car back that night. He said Mason responded indicating she would not be back and did not specify where she was. Shelton believed Mason was either in Ponca City or in Blackwell. He was concerned she did not have the intention of returning the vehicle as she would not answer his texts or calls.

Shelton said Mason had been staying with him for a couple of weeks because she was just released from jail in another county and had nowhere to stay. He also said he had been letting her use the car, but she did not have permission to just take it with the option to return it when she pleased.

The vehicle was described as a maroon 2019 Ford Explorer with a firefighter window decal and two ranch brand decals.

On June 10 in Woods County, Meagann Ruth Mason, 28, of Waynoka, was charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle, a felony. This crime is punishable by imprisonment in the custody of the Department of Corrections for a term not to exceed two years. A warrant has been issued for Mason’s arrest.
