Funeral services for Betty Fleming will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 24, 2021, at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Katie Hill officiating. Interment will be in the Alva Municipal Cemetery under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home of Alva.

Betty Jo Ann Prophet Fleming, daughter of the late Claud Cleveland and Cora Ann (Ager) Prophet, was born June 25, 1933, at Buffalo, Oklahoma, and passed away June 20, 2021, at her home, surrounded by her family.

Betty graduated high school in Buffalo and graduated college at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. On February 19, 1953, she was united in marriage to Leslie Earl Fleming at Buffalo when he was home on furlough from the army. They had two children, James Earl Fleming and Jo Ellen Fleming.

Betty went to beauty college and was a beauty operator in Kansas and Alva. She went back to college when her daughter went to school. She got her teaching degree and was a student teacher under Mrs. Earl Geis. Jo Ellen was in that class at the time. Jo Ellen asked Mrs. Geis if she could call her mom or did she need to call her Mrs. Fleming? If you knew Mrs. Geis, you know the answer –- Mrs. Fleming it was.

Betty taught school at Longfellow Elementary and after receiving her Masters degree, taught Learning Disability at Lincoln Elementary until her retirement in 1997. She taught in the Alva School system for 29 years.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star where she and Earl were active members and she served as Worthy Matron and held all other offices in the Alva Chapter #97. Betty enjoyed camping, fishing, water skiing, and spending time with her family. She also enjoyed traveling and going to the casinos. After retirement, she enjoyed keeping her great grandchildren. She was fortunate enough to be able, along with her husband, Earl, to stay actively involved with her family.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by 11 sisters and brothers and her son, James Earl Fleming, on August 19, 2007.

She is survived by her husband, Earl, of the home; her daughter, Jo Ellen Fleming and Jules of Alva; 12 grandchildren, Ashley Kemp and her late husband, Tom, Aaron Fleming and wife, Abby, Mike Carter and wife, Sherece, Mark Carter and wife, Melis, Jessica Fleming, Justin McOsker and wife, Daniele, and Jennifer Schafer and husband, Craig; 13 great-grandchildren, Alex Williams-Kemp, Megan Williams-Kemp, Tommy Kemp, Collin Condit, Hudson McOsker, Hayden McOsker, Shelby Schafer, Clayse Schafer, Bane Schafer, Chauncey Schafer, Adley Schafer, K.
