Ladybugs lasso the Longhorns Monday

Seniors Brooke Perez and Mary Kate Foster hug it out after the final buzzer went off and the Ladybugs won against Chisholm 51-45 Saturday night. Monday, they beat Washington 45-36 to move onto Area to play against Purcell.

Coming off a disappointing one-point loss to Lindsay on Saturday, the Alva Ladybugs knew they had to win to keep going in the regional playoffs. Monday night, the Alva girls faced the Chisholm Lady Longhorns in Perry. Winning was not an easy task, but the Ladybugs pulled it off, taking a six-point victory, 51-45, over Chisholm.

The beginning of the game was auspicious with Chloe Durkee scoring one of her signature three point shots. The Ladybugs held a slim lead until near the end of the first quarter when free throws by Alice Watkins put Chisholm up by one. Ladybug freshman Jaycee Kelln made one of two free throws to tie. Kelln then went for a layup and was fouled. Her free throw put Alva up by one. The Ladybugs gained possession and stalled until the final seconds when Kelln scored to give Alva a 13-10 lead at the end of the quarter.

During the second quarter, the Ladybugs racked up 18 points to nine for Chisholm. Alva went to the free throw line for 10 of those points out of 14 tries, After scoring six points in the first quarter, Brooke Perez was off the floor for much of the second and third due to fouls. At halftime the Alva lead was 31-19.

Chisholm came back from the break with determination, scoring 15 points in the third quarter to only eight for Alva. The Lady Longhorns managed a one-point lead early in the quarter, but the Alva girls fought back and held a 39-34 lead going into the final quarter.

Two Chisholm players, Avery Lane and Trinity Vogt, fouled out before the game ended. The Ladybugs retained their lead in the fourth quarter, scoring one more point than the Lady Longhorns to win 51-45.

Freshman Lakin Gaddy led the Ladybugs in scoring with 15 points, followed by Durkee with 14 and Perez with 13. Kelln had six points, Mary Kate Foster two and Hallie Hamilton one.

The Chisholm team was led by Grace Winter with 16 points followed by Emma Tennell with eight. Watkins, Vogt and Emma Green had six each while Lane scored three points.

The win advanced the Ladybugs to play in the consolation final against Washington on Tuesday afternoon.
