Oklahoma City man caught in field near JCCC

An Oklahoma City man has been charged in an alleged attempt to throw packages of meth and tobacco over the fence at James Crabtree Correctional Center (JCCC) in Helena.

On Wednesday, May 25, Helena Chief of Police Jim Dykes contacted Christopher Grace, an agent with the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, about a man seen by JCCC staff throwing packages over a fence. The man was later identified as Anthony D. Dotson Jr.

JCCC staff located two packages between security fences near where Dotson had been seen. Agent Grace drove to JCCC and took possession of the packages. Inside one he found loose smoking tobacco and the other contained loose smoking tobacco and a plastic baggy with a crystalline substance. Grace field-tested the substance and found it tested positive for methamphetamine. The substance weighed approximately 29 grams.

Grace met with Chief Dykes and learned Dotson had been taken into custody while running west through a wheat field owned by JCCC. Daniel Curtis, JCCC chief of security, arrived and gave Grace a black backpack. He explained it was found in the field near where Dotson was taken into custody. Grace transported Dotson to the Alfalfa County Sheriff’s Office.

In a post Miranda warning interview, Dotson stated he drove to Helena with the intention of throwing packages over the fence at JCCC, according to the affidavit on file. Dotson stated the backpack found belonged to him. Dotson agreed to ride with Grace to show him where he threw the packages over the fence. He showed where he walked across a field toward the fence and threw one or two packages that landed between the fences. He stated that he saw a man coming toward him so he ran away and was caught in the field.

Anthony D. Dotson, Jr., 21, of Oklahoma City, has been charged with aggravated trafficking in illegal drugs, a felony. This crime is punishable by imprisonment for ten years to life and a fine of $25,000 to $200,000.

Dotson is also charged with bringing tobacco into a penal institution, a misdemeanor.
