Desiree Morehead

According to the Alva Police Department report, the driver of this pickup believes she may have accidentally engaged the cruise control as she was parking, causing the pickup to drive into the building.

Those inside the Palace Barber Shop, 324 7th Street in Alva, were surprised when a pickup crashed through the front window of the building Feb. 28. The collision occurred at 12:49 p.m. Barber shop owner Brian Venosdel and his wife Janet were the only occupants of the building, receiving minor foot injuries in the incident. Janet was transported by Alva EMS to Share Medical Center. Brian drove himself to the hospital.

According to the Alva Police Department report, Patricia Ann Smith of Alva was driving a 2014 Chevrolet pickup attempting to park in front of the barber shop. After turning from the roadway, the pickup accelerated to the parking spot and jumped the curb, colliding with the building. There was damage at both 324 and 326 7th Street. There is no divider between the two addresses, only separate address numbers. Smith said she was unsure how the collision happened, but she believed she might have engaged the cruise control unintentionally, causing the pickup to accelerate as she was parking.

The pickup was drivable but towed due to the possibility of airbag deployment. The brick building is owned by Chaffee Properties of Alva but rented to the Venosdels. David Cummings was the investigating officer.

Wright failed to yield to oncoming traffic and struck at 2020 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Cole Adler Wiersig of Alva and traveling westbound.

Wright was transported by Alva EMS to Share Medical Center. The collision was investigated by Officer Caleb McCullough.
